Hello from your neighbors on Oahu!

My name is Alicia, and I am an event organizer/producer and community builder here on Oahu. I’ve been working hard creating a community that supports conscious collaborative electronic music and multi-media events here on the island and, so far, have been having pretty good success.

I’m writing because I would like to generate some interest amongst people on the other islands who are also engaged in creating events and communities like what I’m trying to create.

I am currently working on a 3-day event called Future Primitive that will be held August 19-21 at a beautiful, private, and legal outdoor venue on the top of a mountain on the leeward side of Oahu. You can check out the details on the event as well as more about our community at: www.localundergroundvibe.com Most of this site is functional but the parts that are still being built should be complete by the beginning part of July. I also have a tribe on tribe.net which is: http://oahuluv.tribe.net

The event in August will focus primarily on all-night electronic music, mostly Progressive, Trance and House. During the day on Saturday there will be workshops offered, hiking trails, lounging at the pool and just hanging out and getting to know people better. We will also have a variety of installations and art built by the community. In addition to the electronic music at night, we want to incorporate live and acoustic music during the day and into the early evening. You can come for one night or both, and if you’re interested in really getting more involved by helping us to create the event, you can come from Thursday to Monday. The price for the event is the same regardless, the only difference in price being that the venue charges a small camping fee per night. Food is available on-site, you can camp or stay in a bunkhouse and there are plenty of indoor showers and bathrooms.

Much of our philosophy is based on the Burning Man spirit of No Spectators and community co-creation. Most of what is created at this event is a community effort and we stress that everyone can (and should!) get involved in making the event great. We encourage people to “bring it on” and share their creative energy with the community as a whole.

I would love to open up dialog with organizers/producers/community builders on the other islands. We especially have a need for visual artists of any and all kinds, workshop presenters and community facilitators (ie, people who can really ‘model’ the ‘bring it’ vibe). Let’s talk and collaborate, who knows where it could lead!

Again, my website (still partly under construction) is: www.localundergroundvibe.com
And my tribe is: http://oahuluv.tribe.net

Much respect and aloha,
Alicia

Dear Friends:
One at Last/Lost at Last is currently looking for sponsors/investors to help us finish up and market our music projects. As most of you know, it's been somewhat difficult to obtain our CDs; even our most recent recording, "Are You Dreaming?" (formerly 'Tear the Walls Down' 2004) was never released due to limited funds. We are considering staying independent (for a while anyway) since the internet has really begun to empower independent artists through the growing opportunities to market music online. Lost at Last has two CDs almost ready to go (just need mastering, mixing & graphics), plus a LIVE CD and a DVD project lined up, and One at Last will have a full CD plus 6 or more singles ready to mix & go out by this June. We have a lot more music & shows on the way, and are hoping that this season we'll be able to (finally) pull the business side of things together. We also need help with our websites, designing and managing. We're soooooo close!!!

In the meantime, to help us afford basic band survival (such as office & recording studio supplies, etc) we are asking for donations: even $5 - $10 will help!! For $20.00 donations, you can receive a free One at Last CD once they're available or a guest pass into one of our shows if applicable. (send to One at Last - PO BOX 5793, Eugene, OR 97405) If you have any ideas or inspirations, please let me know. (via e-mail below)

Blessings, Thanks, Jaya Lakshmi jlakshmi77@aol.com

ps. we're still getting used to "One at Last"- the main reason we had to change our name was because our alter ego in Norway actually claimed the name 3 years before we did, and if you notice, they've taken over all the music download sites! There's still a slight possibility that we could change it again, if someone comes up with an absolutely irresistible name ( if no one else in the world has it, and the domain names are open).

Lost at Last vocalist Jaya Lakshmi chants the praises of the Divine

by Damon Orion

A concert by the techno-tribal band Lost At Last is like a sonic slide show of all the world’s indigenous cultures, set to the space-age thud of electronica. Each beat blasts a new image into the mind’s eye: a cave drawing, a sacred carving, a pagan love-rite, a Navajo quilt, a buck-naked shaman. At the forefront of the festivities, chanting and trance-dancing her way to higher consciousness, is the sleek space gypsy known as Jaya Lakshmi.

When she’s not performing with Lost At Last, Lakshmi can be found doing kirtan—that is, sweetly serenading the Supreme Being in Sanskrit.

From what ancient and exotic locale, one might ask, comes this digital-age holy woman? From what rich soil did this fragrant-voiced lily of a lady spring?

The answer: New Jersey.

Yep, odd but true—the land that gave us Bon Jovi, Eddie Money, Bruce Springsteen and Danny De Vito has also given us Jaya Lakshmi, goddess of the tribal revival. This, of course, begs the question: How does one make the quantum leap from the diners and drive-ins of New Jersey to the cutting edge of multicultural hipness?

Well, for starters, this is a woman who’s done her homework—beginning at the University of New Hampshire, where Lakshmi pursued a major in anthropology.

“I took anthropology because I had an interest in tribal cultures, indigenous peoples, indigenous spirituality,” she explains. “That’s always been my interest, especially in the spirituality of different cultures.”

Lakshmi’s anthropology studies, however, were only the beginning of her spiritual education. Following a five-year stay in Western Oregon after she graduated college, the vocalist moved to the Big Island on Hawaii, where she says she discovered her purposes on the planet: music-making and the devotional path. Along with meeting the musicians who would become her partners in Lost At Last, Lakshmi, who is one-eighth indigenous—her great grandmother belonged to the Fox tribe of the Northern Midwest—took part in a number of Native American peyote ceremonies, which burned the sound of tribal chanting into her frontal lobes.

“It’s not an easy, fun thing—it’s a very deep, profound, life-changing experience,” she says of the ceremonies. “You’re in the tipi from sundown to sunrise. You have to sit up; you’re not allowed to move. You’re allowed to go out of the tipi if you have to go to the bathroom or something, but you have to wait ’til the next round of singing stops.

“Sometimes I would have visions of the pain and suffering that the native people went through and are still going through,” she continues. “That’s part of these ceremonies, too, I think, for the native people, is that they want to heal as a people, and forgive.”

Powerful as these and other of Lakshmi’s spiritual experiences were, however, they proved to be foreplay to her 1992 meeting with the Indian saint Srila Govinda Maharaj, of whom her then-boyfriend was a longtime devotee. Surrounded by about 60 faithfuls in an ashram on the Big Island, the guru initiated the singer into a mystical Hindu sect called the Vaishnava, giving her the name Jaya Lakshmi Devi Dasi—“victory to Lakshmi,” the Hindu goddess of prosperity.

The musician says she felt a pull to the devotional life early on: “I used to go to all these head shops when I was in high school—I didn’t really know anything about Krishna devotees or anything—and I would take all these little pictures of Radha and Krishna off the incense [packages], and I’d put them in my room and tape them on my notebooks. I didn’t even know who they were.”

Lakshmi, a devotee of Srila Govinda Maharaj to this day, describes her guru as very sweet, loving and forgiving, adding that he’s more concerned with the amount of love in his devotees’ hearts than in their sticking to the letter of the Vaishnava law.

“That’s why he says, ‘Chant. Chant,’ because chanting cultivates divine love in your heart,” she says.

Santa Cruzan ears will get a direct hit of Lakshmi’s devotional chanting on Friday, Feb. 25, at the 418 Project, where she’ll perform kirtan accompanied by tabla and sitar. Two local acoustic/electronic groups, Mrdunga Prema and Soul Arrangement, start the show, which celebrates Srila Govinda Maharaj’s current visit to the Seva Ashram in Soquel.

Jaya says doing kirtan is a big help to her: “To me, it sets everything back in place. Everyone’s relationship with God, with the earth, with each other—everything is just put back in its proper balance. To me, chanting realigns us all with this kind of divine perfection, divine awareness of what we’re doing here. Not that we can understand what we’re doing here,” she laughs. “It just makes you feel better about what we’re doing here. It just re-ignites that connection to the source, to God.”

Potent stuff, and much needed in this age of global testosterone poisoning. As Roger Waters once sang, “Each small candle lights a corner of the dark”—a sentiment that Lakshmi exemplifies through her music.

“With all the incredibly disturbing things that are going on in the world, I get a little distracted,” she muses. “I’m like, ‘What is the point?’ So it’s just a battle between light and dark. I’m definitely on the light side, and I’ve just got to do my part, just keeping the focus on the positive, on the love.”

Doing her part is a full-time job for Lakshmi, who, along with being a mother of two, has recently taken on the role of manager for Lost At Last as she and multi-instrumentalist Deva Priyo remodel the band. Since parting ways with Lost At Last’s electronics wizard Om, Lakshmi and Priyo have reunited with trap drummer Michael “MJ” Saint John, who played with the group in the late ’90s. The result, Lakshmi says, will be a less techno—but still dance-oriented—sound.

With the change in direction comes a change in the band’s name. As Jaya explains, a heavy metal band from Norway had the name Lost At Last a year before her band hit the scene. Due to the fact that the Norwegian Lost At Last has taken over the digital airwaves, Jaya and company were forced to rethink their band’s moniker. After taking thousands of potential names to the fitting room, the band formerly known as Lost At Last finally settled on One At Last.

“We wanted to keep some kind of continuity, so people would know we were basically the same group, but a little different,” she explains. “I think maybe some people might think it’s too New Agey or whatever, but I don’t even care at this point.”

Lakshmi says she’s working on a new Web site, www.oneatlast.com, which should be up and running in a month and a half or so. She expects the Last-but-not-Lost incarnation of her group to be ready for performance by May or June.

In the meantime, fans of the Almighty are encouraged to pop into the 418 to hear Jaya’s kirtan. Though the concert will be significantly more down-to-earth than a Lost At Last show (literally—Lakshmi performs at floor level with her audience), the effect will be the same: a tune-up for the spirit.

Jaya Lakshmi performs at 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at the 418 Project, 418 Front St., Santa Cruz. Tickets are $10-$20 (sliding scale). A free event featuring veggie treats, Bhakti discourse and kirtan with special guests precedes the concert, beginning at 7:30 p.m. For more information, call 336-5782.
Eric Francis here. Does anyone have the lyrics to Ocean of Mercy? The English part are easy (though I am in Paris, apart from my CD, so if you have those I would be greatly appreciateive)... but then there's the Indian part. I asked Arpita-Raith, who does Kiertan ceremony at Harbin Hot Springs, if she recognized the chant and she said - oh it's just your average devotional chant! Not being one who takes what I get when I can get a little more, I'm passing it along here. Would love to hear back from you - you may write at francis@planetwaves.net.

Got this in an e-mail and since it's been a couple of months since anyone posted in this tribe I thought I'd share:

There have been many rumours circulating around lately about Lost At Last, and we thought it overdue to put out this letter to the community. All things in this world must change, in order to keep our freshness and growth alive. Bands are no exception. Lost At Last as an entity will not be performing any more live shows. The three of us core members of the band have mutually decided it's time to start new fresh musical projects. Om will be working on some solo album projects and also be forming a new band soon. Lakshmi and Priyo will remain together and are also forming a new band. Stay tuned for these new projects.

We all wanted to take this chance to not only inform all of you, but also to thank all of you, the many uncountable people who have enthusiastically and lovingly contributed to the Lost at Last experience, and also to our appreciative fans, for which all of this would have been impossible.

The first and third albums that Lost at Last has produced, "Lost at Last" (1998), and "Tear the Walls Down" (2004), will continue to be available thru "Native Soul Records" and the "Lost at Last website". The second CD will be either rerecorded, or the original will be made available in the future. Other products will be in the works for the future, such as a DVD chronicling the past 8 years of Lost at Last's history, and some DJ remix albums of Lost at Last songs.

You can still get information for all the former Lost At Last artists at www.lostatlast.com. However, for now the new base site will be www.nativesoulpro.com. Jaya Lakshmi has her own website up, you can visit her at: www.jayalakshmi.net. Priyo and Om will each have their own websites up soon. Om is also available to produce or engineer your dance or meditation music project. (He can be contacted at ommi@aol.com)

We will continue mailings and updates through our e-mail list. For the time being, we have combined the "Lost At Last" mailing list with Priyo's "Gypsy Moon" mailing list and Jaya Lakshmi's "Kirtan" mailing list. If you want to be removed from this combined list please reply with a "remove", or specify which band mailing list you want to be on. In the near future we will have separate mailing lists for each artist as an option on the websites. Currently you can sign up on Jaya Lakshmi's list on her website.

For those of you who do not know Karma Dharma and Native Soul Productions, they are the Executive Producers of our third album and have been helping us through these times of change.

It has been a wonderful and inspired journey, and will hopefully keep evolving into new forms, expressions and configurations.

Thank you all!!
Blessings and ALOHA
Om, Priyo, and Jaya Lakshmi
